The General Council of the Federal Electoral Institute will ask the Legislative Power to allow the voting of Mexicans residing abroad to be done electronically, and not exclusively through postal mail.

President Counselor of IFE Leonardo Valdés Zurita estimated that, if the project is successful, the number of votes from Mexicans residing beyond the borders will rise significantly by 2018. He recognized that the voting model adopted in 2005 has been insufficient to guarantee the political rights of fellow countrymen living abroad.
