The Cyber Statecraft Initiative -an international organization for internet regulation- recently organized a workshop in the United States to discuss internet voting security.
The panel was integrated by experts from the Center for Democracy and Technology of the United States as well as professional technicians from private technology companies from the electronic voting area.
During the event electronic voting was recognized as a fundamental mechanism for the evolution of political processes in the United States, and other participative democracies, provided that there are enough guarantees to support it.
Panelists discussed the application of various developing technologies to upgrade integrity, security and anonymity of online voting systems, such as cryptography and biometrics.
Combined with its acceptance, the potential benefits of online voting in terms of scale, access and participation will likely revolutionize many democratic process around the world.
It is important to highlight that trust, both in the voting system and the relationship between the government and electorate is key to achieve e-voting acceptance.
It’s important to take into account the complexity of the many processes required to establish reliable voting systems in large countries.
In contrast, countries such as Estonia are at a distinct advantage and have made i-voting a successful reality, as its size is smaller and consequently voters could be reached more easily to convince them about the benefits of the system.
