On October 16, the Electoral Court will use an e-voting system during the elections at the International Maritime University of Panama to choose its new president. The house of maritime studies requested this innovation.
The Electoral Court’s Communication and Information Technology management staff set up a training session for faculty, staff, and students to explain how the e-voting system works.
The head of the Project Management department, Elbia Muñoz, said that approximately 12 voting stations and to and 50 e-voting machines would be used during the internal voting process.
Electronic voting was successfully used in the May 4 general elections at the José A. Remón Cantera school. Other successes include the election of the SPIA president, the National Bar Association, the SEN of the PRD, and the selection of the authorities of the Ngäbe-Buglé region, among others.
The International Maritime University of Panama is the first university to use e-voting in hopes of speeding up the tallying process. The president of the Electoral Court, Erasmo Pinilla Castillero, has reiterated on several occasions that the effectiveness, transparency, and speed of electronic voting is “the destiny of modern voting systems”.
