As Election Day approaches for the upcoming Parliamentary elections in Estonia, some citizens already took advantage of the opportunity to participate using their cutting edge i-voting system.
Such are the cases of Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas and President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, who were among the thousands of Estonian people who cast their i-votes at the Parliamentary elections on February 19, the very first day that it was allowed to do so.
According to The Baltic Course, Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas cast his i-vote in the Stenbock House at his work desk. He even published a video on YouTube explaining people how very simple, easy and fast i-voting is.
Meanwhile, Estonian President Tooams Hendrik Ilves also e-voted and posted on his Facebook page a corresponding photo, with the writing: “I have already i-voted, what about you?”
The period to vote online was opened from February 19 and it will last until February 25.
The i-voting system was first used in Estonia in 2005, when some 9,000 citizens used it, and since its implementation, this number has steadily increased. Such is the level of confidence on the system, that in the last EU elections held on 2014, one third of Estonian voters cast their votes online.
