The new Secretary of State for Communities of Portugal, José Luis Carneiro, stated that the government wants to modernize consular services and implement e-voting for expatriates.
According to Carneiro, this modernization process will lead to an integrated system of consular management and a set of online services. Once this service is available online, citizens could obtain citizen cards and passports much more easily and at a fraction of the current cost.
Adopting an e-voting system for Portuguese expatriates would place Portugal as a leader in internet-based voting. In doing so, it could enfranchise hundreds of thousands.
Implementing e-voting and online consular services will certainly bring significant benefits to Portuguese democracy.
