Smartmatic, world leader in electoral technology and services, will be present in the Brazilian General Elections, which will take place on Sunday, October 5th, with the possibility for a second round of voting on the 26th of the month. This elections will serve to elect the nation’s president, governors, and federal and state deputies.

Samira Saba, Director of Communications at Smartmatic, celebrated the company’s participation in the elections of the “South American giant”. “Smartmatic’s role is to provide support for the configuration and deployment of satellite devices, which will enable data and voice communication in the country’s fifteen most remote states. We are pleased to guarantee the right to vote to those citizens who live in rural zones.”

Brazil has a landmass of 8.5 million Km2, which makes communications complex in critical processes such as an election. Smartmatic already deployed this very same technology during the 2012 municipal elections. “Without a doubt, it is a privilege for the company to face similar tasks for this year’s general elections. It will be a new time to showcase, once again, the reasons that make us the leader in electoral technology and services”, stated Saba.

The contract signed with the Brazilian Superior Electoral Court (TSE) contemplates guaranteeing voice and data communication services in 15 of the country’s most remote states during the October elections. The full service package includes: configuring and deploying almost 1.500 BGAN terminals, training the TSE appointed instructors, equipment maintenance and the creation of an 800-number call centre to provide tech support.

Brazil is a world leader when it comes to electoral technology. Voting is mandatory, and its population has exercised their right via e-voting for 18 years. From its 201 million inhabitants, 141.8 million are registered voters. Observers from 24 countries and international organizations will oversee the course of the elections, as stated by the Chief Advisor for International Affairs of the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), Tarciso Costa, who added that these observers will receive general information about the organization and execution of the election, including information about the performance of the Brazilian automated voting platform.
