The University of the West Indies (UWI) at Mona, Jamaica, will introduce an electronic voting system this year. Their goal is to make voting more efficient and increase voter participation among the entire university community, including employees.
Elections were conducted manually until last year. This required voters to show up in person to cast their ballot, and a number of personnel had to be on campus to man the elections on a specific date for a rather long period of time. This situation made voting inconvenient for members of the university community.
The Mona Information Technology Services developed the new system in conjunction with the Office of the Campus Registrar.
In order to guarantee the transparency and reliability of the new system, the processes of nominations and voting should comply with the rules laid out by the institution. The voting system was designed in such a way that only employees and active professors who are listed in the database can cast their ballot.
Users can only vote for one candidate for a particular office, and they can only vote once per election.
In addition, users can only vote for candidates who have already accepted their nomination and have subsequently been placed on the list of registered candidates for that election.
The introduction of electronic voting has significantly improved the efficiency of the voting process. Moreover, it is more accessible to everyone in the university community. The system has already been used successfully in four elections carried out by UWI this year.
