Uganda’s Parliament has recently introduced electronic voting for its internal voting processes. Parliament Speaker Mrs. Rebecca Kadaga said that the system would be implemented this month.
Before the implementation takes place, all parliament members will receive training. Mrs. Kadaga called upon all members to ensure they register in the new platform.
Promoters of this initiative expressed their optimism. They hope that the use of e-voting will increase transparency in voting and overall attendance of the House, as the system will also keep an electronic attendance record.
Opposition Chief Cecilia Ogwal said e-voting is welcomed because the House has always aimed for transparency in voting, especially on controversial issues. Parliament secretary Hellen Kaweesa said that this modern system is used all over the world, thereby should be an added value.
