The upcoming 2014 elections in the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo will be carried out with state-of-the-art electronic voting equipment provided by the Central Electoral Board (JCE).
According to Mateo Aquino Febrillet, rector of the University, the event will serve as a pilot test for subsequent elections. Aquino stated that “electronic voting in the house of higher studies will be possible through an inter-institutional agreement to be signed with the entity organizing the elections.”
Electronic voting will allow for a substantial improvement of transparency and efficiency in the electoral processes of university authorities, and will later be extended to student, teacher and employee elections, as a way of enhancing the democratic process through technology.
