The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) is a non-profit organization that encompasses all of the lawyers who have been admitted to the Nigerian Bar. It is devoted to the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law, and the good governance of Nigeria.

The Election Working Group of the Nigerian Bar Association has characterized the past election for the governor of the State of Ekiti as being fair and just. However, the group urged the Independent National Election Committee to “move towards the use of electronic voting machines (EVM) for future elections, in order to ensure more credibility as it has indicated that it has the capacity to use such a process.”

Nigerian Bar Association recommends electronic voting

According to a recent survey voters favor electronic voting as the system enhances transparency in the electoral process.

The NBA committee that supervised the voting process in the state recognized the efficiency shown by the local National Electoral Institute, in guaranteeing a successful implementation of the electronic voting system in Ekiti.

The group praised the security presence at the polling stations. State observers noted at least three security officers including police and civil defense in the majority of the polling places. Experts estimate that adopting an electronic voting system will reduce the number of security personnel needed for voting.

There are also other logistical aspects that could be significantly improved, such as increasing participation among younger voters and making it easier for handicapped people to vote.
