Last week, Bulgarians living abroad were able to vote during the national referendum on the introduction of remote e-voting.
According to Bulgaria’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC), 312 polling stations were available in 45 countries, with polling stations opening in the US, Spain, and Germany. New polling stations were also opened in Morocco (Rabat), Croatia (Zagreb), and Serbia (Belgrade).
The Bulgarians strongly backed the introduction of e-voting, initially proposed as a presidential initiative. More than half a million citizens signed the petition that led to the referendum. The referendum was seen as an opportunity to exercise their right to speak on such an important issue for democracy.
