According to the Head of the Peruvian National Electoral Office (ONPE), Magdalena Chú 50% of the inhabitants could vote using electronic voting machines for the next regional and municipal elections in 2014. The decision depends mainly on budgetary constraints.

Magdalena Chú also pointed out some of the improvements this system offers over traditional voting. Time and money savings in the electoral processes as well as the overall transparency of the process are the main attractive features e-voting has.

Peru has been gradually adopting electronic voting. In the past, the ONPE has assisted political parties in a few internal primary elections, and one district voted electronically during the second round of elections during the past presidential race.
